Is the Desert Tarantula Dangerous?

Compared to other species of Arachnids the desert tarantula is less aggressive. If they bite, it is not deadly, and they grow up to 4-inches long. The spiders live in burrows and climb trees or hide under rocks or in cracks of trees. The male lives up to 10 years, and the female can live up to 25 years.

The spiders covered with thick bristle hair and have a distinct color. The females color is tan, and the male’s legs are a darker shade. Further, the male has a reddish abdomen with a white thorax in some cases. The only time they will bite is when they are provoked.

When attacked the desert tarantula scrapes the hair off its abdomen and throws it in the attacker’s eyes. The spider does have fangs and the venoms poisonous but not deadly. Many people have described the bite similar to a bee sting. The interesting thing is if the male lingers too long after copulation the female eats him up.

The desert tarantula is a nighttime hunter and pounces on its prey. They eat grasshoppers, beetles, and other insects. Compared to their counterpart the Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula they are small. The Goliath eats snakes, bats, frogs, and lizards.
